Designing signage

Vehicle and building signage is a wonderful, and over the long term, a very cost effective way to promote your business… if done right.

As with all your your marketing material, to get the most value from your signage, it must be professionally designed and consistent with the rest of your marketing material. The last thing you want is to invest a chunk of your budget into signage only to find the end result has a line added here, an extra colour added here, the text element of your logo made larger in proportion to the graphical element that accompanies your logo ‘so it will fit’ and therefore is not consistent with the rest of your brand. Your signage must have the same look and feel as the rest of your marketing material to work well for you.

A team effort between signwriter and designer

To get the most value from your signage budget the creation of your signage needs to be a team effort between the signwriter and an experienced designer. The signwriter is the expert when it comes to knowing the best materials to use and the best way to fix them – the designer is the expert when it comes to creating the right visual effect so the signage is visually stunning, professional and consistent with your brand. If you use an experienced designer they should also have a good knowledge of the practical application of sign construction.

If we are working on a brand for a client we strongly encourage our clients to either get us to organise the signwriting for them or at least allow us to be closely involved in the process. No matter which approach you decide to go with, we will always need to work with the signwriter to a certain degree to ensure we prepare the files correctly for the signwriter. The best scenario is to be able to work together.

If you choose the option of us organising the signage for you this is a brief overview of the process:

  • The first thing we do is work with you to establish what signage is necessary. We carry out a site visit to establish where exactly the signage should go, what potential issues may be evident such as difficult access, objects positioned right in the middle of where we would like the the sign to go etc. We also measure up and photograph the positions where the signage is to go.
  • We then design a visual of the signage, including approximate size, a visual representation of possible materials and the look and feel we feel will best promote your business by creating a mockup on the photos.
  • Next we work with you to refine the concept to a point where you are happy. It could be that an illuminated sign would work well due to the great street profile you have and the amount of traffic that goes by at night. Perhaps a different type of application that makes your name/brand stand out is the best option.
  • Once we have established the general requirements we source the best signwriter for the job. We have a number of signwriters that we use, depending on the job.
  • The final step is to provide the chosen signwriter with the visual representation of the signage and work with them to refine things further to ensure the correct materials are used. Once the signage has been applied we inspect the signage to ensure the signwriter has carried out our instructions.

Involving us does mean it will cost a little more but it also means you will end up with carefully thought out, well designed, well planned and professional signage that will maximise you profile help prevent costly mistakes. It also means you will receive impartial advice. Your signage will be around for awhile – it is worth getting it right.
